Our History

In the middle of the 1960’s, a group of Christian Chinese merchants (mainly Swatow speaking) together with their families had established themselves in Sydney. At that time, Sydney was a very lonely place for the Chinese who have newly immigrated to Sydney. From the early 1960’s, a few families shared their concerns and a vision was born which was to reach the “non church going Chinese Christians” in Sydney. Consequently, in 1964 the “Chinese Christian Fellowship” was formed. By the middle of 1965, with its rapidly growing numbers, the Fellowship’s leadership sought to transition to a legally constituted church. In June 1965, the Fellowship became a legal entity known as Chinese Christian Church, Sydney.

The main objectives of the Chinese Christian Fellowship were:

  • The establishment of an evangelical, interdenominational minded entity to nurture the spiritual welfare of “all” Chinese living in Sydney irrespective of denomination.
  • To establish an “independent” entity, free from the rules and traditions of other groups, with the highest “authority” of this entity being the members.
